Amsonia tabernaemontana

Bluestar Blue Ice

Amsonia comes from the eastern regions of the United States, where they grow in moister grassy habitats. They are undemanding and adaptable perennials, suffering from neither pests nor diseases. They are floristically interesting mainly for their sky-blue flower color and early flowering time at the turn of spring and summer. They can grow in full sun, where the light blue color of the flowers will fade faster, or in partial shade. However, they are interesting all year round – the dark freshly sprouting shoots are striking. Fresh green leaves similar to willow leaves turn mustard yellow shades in autumn. The stems secrete white milk when cut; after searing with a flame and immediately placing in water, they last up to 10 days in a vase. Amsonia Blue Ice is a lower cultivar, growing to a height of 40 cm. Show full description

Baptisia comes from North America, belongs to the legume family, and resembles the lupine in appearance. Unlike lupines, however, it does not suffer from fungal diseases and does not taste as good to slugs. In addition to the blue flowers, the large pods are interesting, decorating the plant long after flowering. Native Americans used Baptisia roots to disinfect wounds and reduce fever, and the leaves to dye fabrics. Patience is key with Baptisia; it takes some time to fully establish and create a massive root system adapted to survive long periods of drought and fire. Then it is very long-lived. It was voted Perennial of the Year for the 2019 season. The elegant pure white 'Alba' also has slightly lighter leaves.

Perovskia atriplicifolia

Perovskia are sparsely branched subshrubs, originating from areas ranging from Afghanistan to Tibet. They grow in open, sunny, rocky, and stony habitats. Their white-felted shoots and grayish aromatic leaves are striking. They fit well in sunny flower beds with other drought-loving perennials, where they create interesting structures even in the winter months. Little Spire is a smaller cultivar suitable even for pots with a soil volume of 7 liters or more.
