The Amsonia 'Blue Ice' seedling will bring a fresh blue color to your garden and is a great choice even for complete beginners. This reliable and long-lived perennial will thrive best in a sunny location, or in light partial shade. Before planting, loosen the soil well and enrich it with compost, as the plant requires humous and loamy soil. While Amsonia appreciates a bed with sufficiently moist soil, once it settles in the garden and develops a strong root system, it becomes highly resilient and can even handle occasional drought. When planting, maintain a spacing of 40 to 45 cm, which corresponds to about 6 to 9 seedlings per square meter, so that the plants do not crowd each other.
During the season, this plant will certainly not burden you with complex care. Its sturdy and compact clumps do not flop over, so you will not have to deal with any support. A significant benefit for every grower is its overall health – it does not suffer from any molds, diseases, or pests. A lot of customers ask if Amsonia can also be grown in a pot or planter on a balcony. The answer is yes, but you must provide it with a sufficiently large container with drainage holes. When growing in a container, keep in mind that the substrate dries out faster, so watering must be more frequent. At the same time, it is advisable to add a little granulated or liquid fertilizer in the spring to support flowering.
Refreshing blue flowers adorn the Amsonia at the turn of May and June, when they attract pollinators to the garden. If you want to use them for cutting, follow a few simple rules for longer lasting freshness in a vase:
- After cutting, slightly singe the ends of the stems with a flame, which will stop the bleeding of white sap.
- The water in the vase will thus remain perfectly clean and the flowers will last you up to ten days.
- Be careful during handling, as the entire plant is slightly poisonous. In autumn, Amsonia beautifully colors its leaves and goes into winter dormancy. Its frost hardiness reaches up to -34 °C, so it does not need any covering. Perform the cutting back of dry stems only in early spring.
