The Oriental poppy originates from the Caucasus, Turkey, and Iran, where it grows on rocky slopes and dry meadows. It blooms with large bowl-shaped flowers on tall stems. Like all poppies, for use in bouquets, we harvest them as soon as the buds color up and "crack". Additionally, we briefly (for about 20 seconds) sear the ends of the stems with a flame and immediately place them in cold water. Then they last in a vase for 4 days. The strikingly hairy and large leaves die back shortly after flowering, and the plant must rest until spring to gather strength. A portion of the leaves sprouts again in late summer. Therefore, it is advisable to plant other perennials in close proximity that sprout later and can draw attention to themselves during the poppy's pause. Vaše nová sazenice citronové trávy k vám dorazí plně prokořeněná a připravená k přesazení. Vzhledem k jejímu tropickému původu ji v našich podmínkách pěstujeme výhradně jako přenosnou rostlinu v nádobách. Jakmile pomine nebezpečí jarních mrazíků, umístěte květináč ven na horké slunné místo. Pro úspěšný růst vyžaduje humózní a dobře propustná půda. Při přesazování nezapomeňte na dno květináče vytvořit silnou drenážní vrstvu, například z keramzitu, protože rostlina absolutně nesnáší přemokření kořenů. Díky pěstování v nádobě získáte nejen flexibilitu při přesouvání, ale také krásný dekorativní prvek na terasu, kde trsy dorůstají působivé výšky 60 až 140 centimetrů.
Během letní sezóny vyžaduje citronela střední zálivku. Zalévejte pravidelně, ale vždy až po mírném proschnutí vrchní vrstvy substrátu. Do vody můžete v době největšího růstu přidávat běžné hnojivo pro bylinky, aby měla dostatek živin. Obrovskou výhodou pro každého začátečníka je její mimořádná odolnost. Tato exotická kráska vůbec netrpí na choroby a přirozeně odpuzuje škůdce, takže se nemusíte obávat komplikací. Během léta můžete průběžně odřezávat vnější listy pro spotřebu v kuchyni. Právě v teplých měsících mají největší obsah aromatických látek a pravidelná sklizeň navíc podporuje houstnutí celého trsu. Od srpna do října vás navíc může překvapit drobnými zelenými květy.
S blížícím se podzimem je nezbytné rostlinu včas zazimovat. Jakmile noční teploty začnou trvale klesat pod 10 °C, přesuňte květináč do světlé místnosti. Ideální je chladnější, ale bezmrazé prostředí s teplotou kolem 15 °C. V zimním období rostlina přechází do fáze odpočinku, proto zálivku výrazně omezíme. Vodu doplňujte opravdu hodně opatrně, nejlépe až po úplném vyschnutí substrátu, jinak hrozí uhnití kořenů. Během zimy omezte také sklizeň a nechte voňatku nabrat síly na další sezónu. Na jaře pak stačí odstranit suché či poškozené listy, případně rostlinu rozdělit, čímž ji zmladíte a připravíte na nový růst.
