Growing the fragrant Ippon tulip brings a lot of joy and can be managed without any problems even by complete beginners if you prepare the right conditions for it right at the beginning of autumn. This species loves direct sun most of all, but it will also thrive very well in light partial shade. Try using it, for example, as an elegant border in front of lower ornamental shrubs. The most important step to success is the careful preparation of well-drained and humus-rich soil. Planting of the large bulbs themselves always takes place in the autumn months, with the ideal period lasting from September to the end of November. Plant the received bulbs carefully to a depth of 10 to 15 centimeters. To ensure that individual plants thrive well, have enough living space, and do not compete for nutrients, follow the recommended spacing of 10 to 15 centimeters. The result of your work will be a beautifully filled, compact, and richly flowering area in the spring. The ideal quantity for planting ranges from 50 to 70 bulbs per square meter.
During dynamic spring growth and subsequent flowering throughout April and May, ensure regular yet balanced watering. The chosen location should definitely not dry out for long periods, but also keep in mind that permanent waterlogging is strictly dangerous for bulbous plants. It is precisely the excess of retained water in the soil that is usually the main and most common cause of the dreaded fusarium or gray mold. In optimal conditions, however, the plant is very vital and resilient, even though the mosaic virus can occur in rare cases. If you ensure a well-drained planting bed for the bulbs, you will avoid these troubles very easily. The white flowers rise on strong and sturdy stems that reach a total height of 30 to 45 centimeters. Not only do they boast a wonderful and completely pure white color, but they also excel with an unusually pleasant fragrance. This will guaranteed and quickly attract many useful pollinators to your awakening garden, especially hungry bees and bumblebees.
If you want to enjoy these beautiful white flowers in the comfort of your home, the Ippon variety is an absolutely ideal choice for cutting. You can achieve the longest shelf life in a vase quite easily – just cut the sturdy stems when the bud is already colored white but is still firmly closed. Care for tulips after their spring flowering ends is very easy but absolutely essential for flowering in future years. Always conscientiously remove only the faded heads so that the plant does not form seeds. However, let all the green leaves naturally dry out and die off, because thanks to them, the plant draws all the necessary energy back into the underground bulb. Given the exceptionally high frost resistance, which reaches down to -25 °C, the bulbs can remain completely safely in the soil through the winter. As a reliable short-lived perennial, this elegant, medium-tall tulip will delight you with its magical flowers for several beautiful spring seasons in a row.
