Unlike lupine, however, it does not suffer from fungal diseases and does not taste as good to slugs. Besides the blue flowers, the large pods that adorn the plant long after flowering are interesting. North American Indians used Baptisia roots to disinfect wounds and lower fever, and leaves to dye fabrics. With Baptisia, patience is most important; it takes some time to fully establish and create a massive root system adapted to survive long periods of drought and fire. Then it is very long-lived. V zahradě poroste nejlépe na vlhčích místech s dostatkem slunce. V horkém létě bude rád za odpolední stín stromů nebo vyšších keřů, který zabrání popálení tmavých listů. Při hledání ideálního místa pamatujte, že půda by měla být především humózní a hlinitá, aby dokázala dlouhodobě zadržovat vodu. Rostliny dorůstají výšky 80 až 100 centimetrů a mají poměrně bujný růst, proto dodržujte spon kolem 80 centimetrů. Správné rozestupy jsou klíčové pro dobré proudění vzduchu a zdravý vývoj. Pokud milujete výrazné barvy, dopřejte rostlině více ranního slunce, které vybarví její listy do úchvatných hnědých a bronzových tónů.
Nejdůležitějším bodem péče je zálivka, protože sadec zkrátka miluje vodu a suchá půda mu vůbec nesvědčí. Během suchých a horkých měsíců dbejte na to, aby byl substrát neustále mírně vlhký. Okolí rostliny můžete zamulčovat, což pomůže udržet optimální mikroklima u kořenů. Sadec lze úspěšně pěstovat i ve velkých nádobách na terase nebo balkonu. Při pěstování v květináči je nutné zvolit dostatečně objemnou nádobu, která poskytne kořenům dostatek místa a udrží více vlhkosti. Nezapomeňte, že v omezeném prostoru nádoby rostlina spotřebuje vodu mnohem rychleji. Častá, někdy i každodenní zálivka a pravidelné přihnojování tekutým organickým hnojivem bude nezbytností pro dosažení bohatého kvetení a udržení krásných velkých listů.
Péče o tuto dlouhověkou trvalku je naprostá hračka, kterou hravě zvládne každý začátečník. Pro kompaktnější růst můžeme stonky sadce na přelomu května a června o třetinu až polovinu zakrátit. Tímto trikem docílíte toho, že rostlina bude hustší, stabilnější a obejde se zcela bez opory. Od poloviny léta až do září se sadec odmění záplavou čistě bílých, silně aromatických květů. Ty jsou perfektní k řezu do váz a na zahradě spolehlivě fungují jako magnet na včely. Sadec je mimořádně vitální, zcela se mu vyhýbají škůdci a netrpí chorobami. S blížící se zimou nevyžaduje žádnou speciální péči, protože disponuje excelentní mrazuvzdorností až do -28 °C. Celou zimu tak můžete rostlinu nechat v klidu odpočívat a teprve před začátkem jarního rašení odstranit staré suché stonky. Jen nezapomeňte, že i když je krásný, není jedlý a řadí se mezi jedovaté rostliny.

The cultivar Caradonna stands out with a long flowering period and dark, almost black-purple stems with tiny purple flowers and dark purple bracts. If we cut it back after flowering, it will bloom again in late August and September.
