The Oriental poppy originates from the Caucasus, Turkey, and Iran, where it grows on rocky slopes and dry meadows. It blooms with large bowl-shaped flowers on tall stems. Like all poppies, for use in bouquets, we harvest them as soon as the buds color up and "crack". Additionally, we briefly (for about 20 seconds) sear the ends of the stems with a flame and immediately place them in cold water. Then they last in a vase for 4 days. The strikingly hairy and large leaves die back shortly after flowering, and the plant must rest until spring to gather strength. A portion of the leaves sprouts again in late summer. Therefore, it is advisable to plant other perennials in close proximity that sprout later and can draw attention to themselves during the poppy's pause. Royal Wedding flowers have white petals with a dark burgundy spot in the center of the flower.

Výběr stanoviště a půda
Krvavec je vděčná a dlouhověká trvalka, která do vaší zahrady vnese kousek divoké přírody. Aby se jí u vás dařilo, vyberte jí místo na slunci nebo v polostínu. Přirozeně se vyskytuje na vlhkých loukách, proto nejlépe prospívá v půdě, která je hlinitá, jílovitá a dobře zásobená humusem. Klíčové je, aby stanoviště nevysychalo – suchá a písčitá půda této rostlině nesvědčí a může vést k oslabení. Pokud máte na zahradě těžší půdu, která drží vlhkost, bude tam krvavec naprosto spokojený. Naopak v chudých půdách doporučujeme před výsadbou zapracovat dostatečné množství kompostu, který pomůže zadržet vodu a dodá živiny potřebné pro tvorbu bohatých trsů a vysokých květních stonků.
Výsadba a péče o sazenice
Jelikož obdržíte již vzrostlou sazenici, můžete ji vysazovat prakticky kdykoliv během vegetační sezóny, pokud není půda zamrzlá. Při výsadbě do záhonu dodržujte doporučený spon přibližně 50 cm (tedy asi 4 až 6 rostlin na metr čtvereční). Tento rozestup je důležitý nejen pro estetický dojem, ale především pro zajištění dobré cirkulace vzduchu mezi rostlinami. Právě proudění vzduchu funguje jako prevence proti padlí, ke kterému může být krvavec náchylný, pokud roste v přílišném zahuštění nebo suchu. Po výsadbě rostlinu důkladně zalijte a v prvních týdnech kontrolujte, aby kořenový bal nepřeschl, než sazenice plně zakoření na novém stanovišti.
Zálivka, hnojení a zdravotní stav
Jak již bylo zmíněno, krvavec miluje vláhu. Zálivka by měla být pravidelná, zejména v horkých letních dnech. Pro udržení vlhkosti v půdě se velmi osvědčuje mulčování organickým materiálem kolem základny rostliny. Co se týče hnojení, rostlina není přehnaně náročná – stačí jí na jaře dodat vrstvu kompostu nebo použít běžné organické hnojivo pro trvalky. Z hlediska škůdců je krvavec bezproblémový, netrpí na okusy ani hmyzí nájezdy. Pozor si dejte pouze na padlí, které se projevuje bělavým povlakem na listech. Objevuje se zpravidla tehdy, když je rostlina ve stresu ze sucha. V takovém případě neváhejte a celou rostlinu radikálně seřízněte až u země. Krvavec má úžasnou regenerační schopnost a brzy obrazí novými, zdravými a svěže zelenými listy.
Zimování, řez a pěstování v nádobách
Jedná se o plně mrazuvzdornou rostlinu (až do -34 °C), takže naši zimu zvládne bez jakékoliv ochrany. Na podzim rostlinu nemusíte nutně stříhat; její suchá květenství vypadají v zimní zahradě, zvláště když je pokryje jinovatka, velmi dekorativně. Staré stonky odstraňte až brzy na jaře před rašením nových listů. Často se ptáte na pěstování v nádobách – krvavec lze pěstovat i ve velkém květináči na terase, ale vyžaduje to trochu více péče. Nádoba musí být dostatečně objemná a hluboká, aby pojala kořenový systém a nevysychala příliš rychle. V nádobách je nutné hlídat zálivku mnohem pečlivěji než ve volné půdě, protože proschnutí substrátu by rostlině uškodilo. Pokud jí však dopřejete dostatek vody, odmění se vám záplavou vínových kvítků i tam.
