Baptisia comes from North America, belongs to the legume family, and resembles lupine in appearance. Unlike lupine, however, it does not suffer from fungal diseases and does not taste as good to slugs. Besides the blue flowers, the large pods that adorn the plant long after flowering are interesting. North American Indians used Baptisia roots to disinfect wounds and lower fever, and leaves to dye fabrics. With Baptisia, patience is most important; it takes some time to fully establish and create a massive root system adapted to survive long periods of drought and fire. Then it is very long-lived. It was chosen as the Perennial of the Year for the 2019 season.

Bazalka je teplomilná, na zahradu ji vysazujeme od poloviny května, kdy už nehrozí ranní mrazíky. Tuto předpěstovanou sazenici můžete z květináče rovnou umístit na záhon. Bazalce vyhovuje slunné a chráněné stanoviště s výživnou, propustnou půdou. Příliš mokré a jílovité půdy nejsou vhodné, protože jemné kořeny potřebují dýchat a ve vlhku by mohly uhnívat. Při výsadbě pamatujte na dostatek prostoru a dodržte spon padesát centimetrů, což odpovídá zhruba čtyřem rostlinám na metr čtvereční. Tento velkorysý rozestup zajistí výbornou cirkulaci vzduchu, díky čemuž rostlina rychle sílí a skvěle prosperuje.
Během letní sezóny vyžaduje bazalka běžnou, ale pravidelnou zálivku. Půda by měla být mírně vlhká, ovšem nikdy ne trvale plná vody. Pokud se rozhodnete pro velmi oblíbené pěstování v nádobě nebo truhlíku na terase, ujistěte se, že má květináč odtokové dírky a na dno nasypte drenážní vrstvu z kamínků nebo keramzitu. V květináči substrát vysychá rychleji, proto zálivku častěji kontrolujte. Pro bujný růst do výšky třiceti až čtyřiceti centimetrů doporučujeme občasné přihnojování čistě organickými hnojivy určenými pro bylinky, abyste aromatické listy mohli bez obav konzumovat.
Pěstování této odrůdy je ideální i pro úplné začátečníky, potěší vás totiž vynikajícím zdravím a netrpí na žádné choroby ani škůdce. Odrůda Coldasil navíc přináší nečekanou výhodu v závěru sezóny. Zatímco běžné bazalky s prvním chladem chřadnou, tato statečně odolává podzimním teplotám a zvládne i lehký mrazík až do minus šesti stupňů, takže budete sklízet mnohem déle. Přesto jde o klasickou letničku, kterou na zimu nijak nechráníme, protože její životní cyklus s příchodem tuhé zimy přirozeně končí. Necháte-li rostlinu od června do září rozkvést, odmění se vám světle růžovými květy, které fungují jako magnet pro včely a motýly.

Mateřídouška Coccineus je drobná, ale nepřehlédnutelná trvalka, která do zahrady vnese nádhernou vůni a záplavu barev. Ve volné přírodě roste na slunných a suchých stráních, skalách a písčitých místech, proto i u vás na zahradě ocení podobné podmínky. Nejlépe se jí daří na plném slunci v dobře propustné a chudší písčité půdě. Je to naprosto nenáročná rostlina, kterou bez obav zvládnou i začátečníci.
